Characteristics of the Variety
Touriga Nacional is a vigorous variety, but with low yield, susceptible to diseases such as powdery mildew and downy mildew, and requiring good sun exposure and well-drained soils to achieve its best expression. It generally ripens in a mid-to-late stage of the growing cycle.
Aromatically, it is characterized by floral notes (violet), wild berries (blackberry, blueberry), and sometimes balsamic and licorice touches. On the palate, it stands out for its intense color, firm tannins, and good acidity, which gives the wines strong aging potential.
